Why is the coastline so far away?
Ephesus developed within the former estuary of the Kaystros River. Over centuries, sediment reshaped the coastline and formed the broad plain visitors see today. UNESCO describes successive Ephesian settlements responding to a coastline that retreated westward. The city did not lose the sea in a single dramatic night; geography changed the terms of urban life slowly and relentlessly.

Stand near the theatre and look along the axis of Arcadian Way. Imagine colonnades, shops, movement and the noise of travelers arriving from the port. The theatre itself changed repeatedly from the Hellenistic period through Roman and late-antique use. Research by the Austrian Archaeological Institute has reconstructed those building phases, showing why the monument should not be treated as one frozen biblical backdrop.
